Budapest Vienna Bratislava Prague
The centers of Jewish life in the Hapsburg Empire, where Jewish life is reviving.
Straddling East and West, the Slavic and Germanic lands, many cultures met in the Hapsburg Empire, sometimes clashing, sometimes enriching each other.

The imperial capitals of Vienna and Budapest retain much of their former glory. Upwardly mobile Jews built magnificent synagogues and communal buildings, many of which are extant. Vienna and Prague, the latter a 'rediscovered' gem of a city, share the rich musical heritage of Mozart and Mahler, and great literary traditions, such as those of the Czech Jew, Franz Kafka.
Bratislava, the Slovak capital, was home to less acculturated and more religiously fervent Jews. One can visit the underground cemetery where the "Hatam Sofer," leader of Central European Jewry, is buried along with other luminaries. Newly organized Jewish schools in Vienna, Budapest and Prague testify to the vitality of Judaism in areas devastated by the Holocaust. We shall travel by train or bus among these Hapsburg cities, enabling us to see the fascinating and changing countryside of what are now four independent states.
